Simple Breathing Exercises for Healthy Lungs

As you age, your lung capacity and function typically decrease. There are certain health conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that further reduce your lung capacity. Luckily, there are simple exercises that can keep your lungs healthy and provide oxygen to your body.

Breathing Exercises That You Can Practice

* Rib-stretch: This can be done by anyone. You need to hold air in the lungs for as much time as possible. In the rib-stretch exercise, stand up straight with your back arched, fill your lungs with oxygen, hold your breath for 10 seconds and then exhale slowly. Do it at least once a day.

* Diaphragmatic breathing: Diaphragmatic breathing is particularly helpful in people suffering from COPD. In this exercise, it engages the diaphragm and strengthens it. You need to sit back or lie down, and put one hand on your chest and the other in your abdomen. Breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your pursed lips while pressing the belly.

* Numbered breathing: This simple breathing exercise requires you to breathe in and out to a number of times. To perform this exercise, you need to take a deep breath while standing. Exhale all the air out of your lungs after holding it for a few seconds. Repeat the process ten times.

* Pursed-lips breathing: This slows down the breathing, making it easier for lungs to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. To practice this technique, you need to inhale slowly and exhale through pursed lips. Breathing out should take as twice the time as inhaling.

However, not all four techniques are required to keep your lungs healthy. You need to know which breathing exercise suits you the best. If you are looking forward to knowing more about lung exercises, start a discussion on Curedit.
