What is Whiplash and How is it Treated?

A sudden jerk or blow in your head, causing it to move backward or forward can lead to a neck strain. Often, known as whiplash, this sudden force can tear the muscles and stretches the tendons of your neck. It affects many athletes and people who are more into physical activities and sports.

Though strains are often confused with sprains, they are bit different. However, once you get it, you face pain and discomfort in your neck areas. There are multiple ways to treat the pain. With given time, whiplash heals on their own, but there are certain ways that you can try to speed up the recovery.

The treatments include:

# Painkillers or prescribed drugs- There are many non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory drugs available in the market like naproxen (Aleve) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) that alleviates aches and swelling. However, it is not recommended to consume them without a doctor’s guidance. If the medications do not work, muscle relaxants are also helpful.

# Using a neck collar or brace- This adds support to your neck, making it easier for the patients to turn their head and neck. But, these supports are not recommended for long-term use as they weaken the neck muscles.

# Applying ice- Putting ice to your neck helps to minimize the swell and pain. At least do it for 2-3 days and see the effect. Put the ice in a thin towel or cloth and place it on the injured spot for 15 minutes. Direct apply to the skin can cause injury.

# Applying heat- This procedure can be adopted once you have iced the affected area for 2-3 days. Apply heat to the area only when the swelling is gone. Warm or wet towels can be used for this process.

# Other alternatives- Massaging the area may also help you

Are you facing whiplash in your neck? You can try out the above-mentioned options or message a specialist at Curedit.
