How to Detect the Presence of Thyroid Nodules

Nodules are either solid or fluid-filled lumps. Most thyroid nodules are non-cancerous in nature and rarely, an approximate number of 10-15% of people with thyroid nodules are diagnosed with cancer germs.

Types of thyroid nodules

#
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis - It is the most common type of underactive thyroid disease occurring in the human body. The form of hypothyroidism is associated with this.
# Multinodular Goiter - An overall enlargement of the thyroid gland results in this. The nodules get filled with too many thyroid cells or with extra colloid, thus forming the goiter.
# Thyroid Cyst - This happens due to breakage of the nodules and gets filled with blood.

Symptoms of thyroid nodules

Although most of the people having thyroid nodule do not have any symptoms, there might be some subtle changes that might be overlooked. You may notice the following:
1. You might have a bulging lump in front of the neck. Even if not a big one at first, a small lump in the throat increasing in size rapidly is an acute symptom for you to understand the existence of thyroid nodules.
2. You might face difficulty in swallowing your food, considering the nodule to be positioned in a way that blocks the food pipe. The food particles have difficulty in passing to the stomach through the esophagus and this gives you the uneasy feeling.
3. Due to an odd alignment of the nodule, your voice might start sounding hoarse all of a sudden. Take a notice of this and do not brush it off as a light matter.
4. There might be signs of other lymph nodes or enlarged glands in and around the neck.

Get a thorough physical examination including the laryngeal exam (a checkup of the vocal cords) and an elaborate thyroid scan with low-dose radioactive iodine or technetium to prevent the formation of thyroid nodules.
